The Teaching of PSHE

Our PSHE Leader is Mrs Rachel Parker
PSHE at Hoyland Springwood
Welcome to our school's dedicated section on Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE). We believe that a well-rounded education encompasses more than academic subjects; it also includes nurturing the holistic development of our students.
Here at Hoyland Springwood, we recognize the importance of PSHE in equipping our students with essential life skills, promoting their emotional well-being, and preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood. Part of our PSHE curriculum is taught using a program called One Life, which is designed to empower students with knowledge and practical skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Through engaging and interactive lessons, we address a wide range of topics relevant to the personal, social, health, and economic aspects of our students' lives. We work hard to create a safe and inclusive learning environment where students can openly discuss and explore these topics.
We cover various key areas, such as mental health and well-being, healthy relationships, personal safety, digital literacy, financial literacy, and career development. Our curriculum is tailored to different age groups, ensuring that the content is age-appropriate and aligns with the developmental needs of our students.

One Life

Our PSHE Curriculum is taught through our programme following a deliberately planned and carefully sequenced curriculum which goes above and beyond the Department for Education's statutory guidance. The clear end goal of the programme is to ensure that all pupils know how to live a healthy, safe and happy life and know to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. At the heart of One Life is building a strong mental, physical and social fitness. Each statutory requirement has been broken down into age-appropriate content which has been sequenced and connected to ensure that children know more and do better.

Traffic Lights
Through the One Life Curriculum, children are taught to understand the warning signs of their Mental, Social and Physical Fitness. This is linked to a traffic light system to support the children to identify whether they are staying fit within these three key elements of their life.

Morning Routine
Every morning, our children are welcomed into school  and complete their morning routine. This ensures our children arrive at school and they are happy and settled to learn. Every class completes a morning routine creating a sense of belonging and calm.

One Life Overview
One Life Shared Language
In addition to One Life, RSE and other personal development lessons (as shown in our progression document below) classroom lessons, we organize extracurricular activities that further enhance students' understanding and engagement with PSHE topics. We encourage active participation, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue to foster a positive learning experience.

Through our PSHE program, we aim to empower our students to make informed decisions, build positive relationships, develop resilience, and lead healthy and fulfilling lives. We strive to create a nurturing environment that promotes the holistic well-being of every individual within our school community.

We invite you to explore our PSHE section on the website, where you'll find information about our curriculum, resources for parents, and updates on upcoming events and initiatives. Together, let's work towards developing confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared to thrive in the world beyond our school walls.
