The Teaching of Physical Education

Our PE Leader is Mr Darren Gale
Physical Education at Hoyland Springwood
Welcome to our schools dedicated section on Physical Education. At Hoyland Springwood we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Our goal to inspire a love of physical activity and sport that pupils will carry with them beyond their school years. We believe that physical education is essential to promoting pupil well-being, social and emotional development, and academic achievement.
We deliver physical education in our school using a holistic approach that meets the needs of all pupils. Our curriculum is based on the national curriculum for physical education supported through the use of Striver, but it is adapted to suit our pupils' interests and abilities. The curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced range of activities that promote the development of physical literacy, personal, social, cultural, and creative skills.

Our teaching approach is pupil-centered, and we create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. We provide structured and unstructured play-based opportunities that enable pupils to learn and develop independently through active and guided exploration. Our teachers use a range of teaching strategies, including cooperative learning, questioning, modelling, feedback, and assessment for learning to stimulate pupils' thinking and help them improve their physical skills and knowledge.

We also offer extra-curricular physical activities that enable pupils to develop their interests, talents, and aspirations beyond the classroom. We encourage and support pupils to participate in intra- and inter-school competitions and to represent our school in various events.
Our physical education provision has a positive impact on our pupils' well-being and achievement. Pupils develop a love of physical activity, sport, and healthy living. They acquire a range of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills that help them succeed in school and beyond. Our pupils' fitness, confidence, self-esteem, self-awareness, and resilience improve as they progress through the school. They also develop positive attitudes towards teamwork, leadership, fair play, and respect for others.

Our pupils also achieve well in inter-school competitions and events, taking part in a wide variety of sports and they leave our school with high levels of physical literacy and a positive attitude towards sport and healthy living.
