Computing at Hoyland Springwood
Welcome to the exciting world of computing at Hoyland Springwood! Our computing program is designed to equip our students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in our increasingly digital society. Through engaging and hands-on experiences, we foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
At Hoyland Springwood, we recognise the significance of technology in our everyday lives and understand the importance of preparing our students for the future. Our computing curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in various aspects of computing, including:
Through a range of age-appropriate activities and projects, our students develop their computational thinking skills, which involves breaking down complex problems, recognising patterns, and devising logical solutions. They also learn how to code using platforms and languages suitable for their age, cultivating their abilities to create and express themselves through technology.
We provide a dynamic learning environment that encourages collaboration and teamwork. Our students engage in group projects, where they learn to communicate effectively, share ideas, and work together to achieve common goals. These experiences foster essential skills such as communication, leadership, and adaptability.

Quotes from the children about Computing during last pupil voice interviews
“I like working on computers because it’s technology and it’s the future!” Year 4 child.
“We have been learning about E-safety – you can’t believe everything you see. Some stuff can lead you to a false website where it asks you to buy something or give false information that’s not true. I liked learning about the internet and different websites. I can access the school website and see how that links to networks.” Year 5 child.
“We have learned about Networks – They pass on a message and they work together. In school we have computers and we put documents on a shared network. Mrs Parker in assembly could save her PowerPoint and then share it in the hall. We always complete a recap at the beginning of the lesson about what we did before. If we miss anything, we always do a recap over the important things from the last lesson.” Year 3 child
“We were learning about the parts of the computer. We are allowed to do it, we practice and then we don’t forget.” Year 1 child.
“I like learning about IT because it’s fun.” Year 2 child.
